Reminders, Clarifications and Specific Greg Grant Sportsplex Rules

Player Check In: Prior to the start of the game(s) of the first week, all players must check in at the front desk to ensure they are rostered, registered, and paid properly. All league payments are due the first week.

Number of Players Needed to Begin Game: See Game Forfeit procedures

Uniform Requirements: To participate in the Greg Grant Sportsplex leagues, each player must have a numbered shirt or jersey, each team is required to either provide their own uniforms or purchase a reversible mesh jersey available at the Greg Grant Sportsplex for $35.

Forfeits: See Game Forfeit Procedures

Jump Ball: There will be a jump ball at the start of a game. After that, the alternating possession rule will be in effect for all jump ball situations.

Alternating Possessions: Teams will alternate ball possession for jump ball situations and at the start of any quarters/half.

Warm-Up Period: A (5) minute warm-up period will be allowed before the start of each game. Note: If games are behind schedule, this can be waived by the refs & score-table to help get the games back on schedule and prevent them from getting further behind.

Team Spokesperson: The on-court playing captain/coach of the team will be the sole spokesperson of the team. He/she is the only person that may discuss a game situation with the referee/scorekeeper.

Game Length: Games are either two (2) twenty-minute halves or (4) quarters of 8 minutes depending on the division that is being played. There is a running clock except in the last (1) minute of the second half, and during time-outs.

Half Time: There will be a 1 minute break for half time. The referees will enforce this rule strictly. Team’s not on the court and ready to play at the end of this break will be charged a technical foul for every (1) minute they delay the start of the second half.

Timeouts: Each team will receive two (30) second timeouts per half of regular game time. Time outs do not carry over. One (30) second timeout is awarded to each team for overtime, regardless of how many overtimes there are.

Ceiling: The Greg Grant Sportsplex ceiling, beams, and walls are out of bounds. As a reminder, the sides and bottom of the backboard are in play, and the top & back of the backboard is out of bounds.

Mercy Rule: If during the last 10 minutes of a 40-minute game, the score is greater than 40 points the game will end in a mercy. If during the last 8 minutes of a 32-minute game, the score is greater than 30 points the game will end in a mercy. If the team that is losing wants to continue the game, they must express this to the referees to prevent stoppage.

Dunking: The Greg Grant Sportsplex will allow dunking during all games. The referees will assess technical fouls to players that hang on the rim, and/or dunk during the Warm Up period.

Player and Team Fouls: As a reminder, players will be allowed (5) personal fouls before they are disqualified from the game (foul out.) The “bonus” situation will occur when a team is charged with their 7th team foul of the half. All bonus situation’s will be ‘one and one’ shooting situations, except when the team is charged with 10+ fouls they will shoot two free throws.

Running Clock Rule: If a team is losing by 16 or more, the clock will keep running except on time-outs.

Fouled while shooting a 3-Pointer: If a player is fouled while shooting a 3-Point shot:
A) If the shot is made, the shooter is awarded (3) points plus gets one free throw
B) If the shot is missed, the shooter will be awarded (3) free throws.

Player Substitutions: Players may substitute for a teammate in any dead-ball situation. During two free throws, subs occur after the first free throw. All subs must check in at the scoretable 

Overtime: In the event a game ends in a tie at the end of regulation time please see the following for each division: For grades 3rd-12th, the length of the first overtime will be (1) minute with a stopped clock. There will be one (1) 30 second time-out per team in overtime. The second overtime will be (1) minute with a stopped clock. The third overtime is sudden death. First team to score any point in sudden-death, including free throws wins. For our Adult leagues, the 1st overtime will be (3) minutes, 2nd overtime (2) minutes, 3rd overtime (1) minute. In the event it goes any longer, the first team to score any point in sudden-death, including free throws wins.

Free Throw Lineup Rule: Only (6) players are allowed to line-up during a free throw. Of the (6) players, there are only (3) allowed from each team. The defensive team is allowed three players, while the offensive team is allowed two players, plus the shooter.

Taunting Rule:
– Taunting includes any actions or comments by coaches, players, spectators, and/or parents which are intended to bait, anger, embarrass, ridicule, or demean others, whether or not the deeds or words are vulgar and/or racist. Included is conduct that berates, needles, intimidates, or threatens based on race, gender, ethnic origin or background, and conduct that attacks religious beliefs, size, economic status, speech, family special needs, or any other personal matters.
– Examples of taunting that would lead to ejection include but are not limited to, “trash talk,” physical intimidation outside of the game, reference to sexual orientation, “in-the-face” confrontation by one player to another, standing over/straddling a downed player.
– In all sports, officials are to consider taunting a flagrant unsportsmanlike foul that disqualifies the offending bench personnel or contestant from that contest/day of competition, as well as the next contest/day of competition. A warning may be given, but is NOT required before ejection.

Youth Basketball League Rules

In all cases during league play, the Greg Grant Sportsplex League Rules override the High School Rules, or any other rules teams may be following.

1. PLAYER ELIGIBILITY:
All players must have a player registration and waiver filled out, or completed online, before participating in the first game. All roster changes must be made before the start of the fifth game, no changes in rosters will be allowed after that point, unless approved by a league manager. To be eligible to participate in the 3rd/4th grade you must be in the 3rd or 4th grade and 10 years old or younger. If you are in the 5th/6th grade league you must be in 5th or 6th grade and 12 years old or younger. Likewise, to be eligible to participate in the 7th/8th grade league you must be in 7th or 8th grade and 14 years old or younger.
For players filling in, you must have A) a completed player registration form, or previous player registration form completed and B) payment of $15 per game played ($10 per game played for 3rd/4th Grade Division)
*No exceptions will be made to these rules without authorization of a Greg Grant Sportsplex league director.

2. GAME PROCEDURES:
A. Games will be four (4), eight (8) minute quarters for all 3rd/4th grade & 5th/6th grade leagues. All 7th/8th leagues & J.V./Varsity League games use two, 20 minute halves.
B. There will be a (30) second rest between 1st and 2nd quarters, and 3rd and 4th quarters
C. There will be a two (1-2) minute half time.
D. Each team is allowed 2 full time outs per half (time-outs do not carry over from half to half.) Time-outs may be requested by players on the floor or by the Coach on the bench when the ball is dead or in control of their team.
E. A running clock will be used, and only stopped during time outs and the last minute of the 2nd half, or 4th quarter. The clock will continue to run if a sixteen (16) or more point differential exists.
F. In the event a game ends in a tie at the end of regulation time, the length of the first overtime will be (1) minute with a stopped clock. There will be one (1) 30 second time-out per team in overtime. The second overtime will be (1) minute with a stopped clock. The third overtime is sudden death. First team to score any point in sudden-death, including free throws wins.

3. MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM PLAYING TIME:
The coach of his or her team will determine playing time for each player. The Greg Grant Sportsplex is not responsible for allocating playing time for teams that have been brought in as a team.

4. MINIMUM NUMBER OF PLAYERS:
Four players must be present to start and finish a game. Less than four (4) will result in a forfeit.

5. WARM UP TIME:
If games are running behind schedule, oncoming teams’ warm up time may be waived or reduced at the discretion of the referee/scorekeeper, or facility director.

6. BENCH PERSONNEL:
All teams must have a coach (An adult 18 & over) present on the bench for all games, and only 1 coach may stand while the other coaches must be seated. Only players on the roster and the assigned coaches will be allowed on the team’s bench or surrounding area. Only two coaches will be allowed on the team’s bench – 1 head coach and 1 assistant coach. Coaching box – the length of your bench, for players and official safety coaches are not allowed to go onto the playing floor at any time during the game. Failure to comply will result in a technical foul being assessed, and potentially the removal of the guilty individual(s) to the spectator area.

7. BENCH DECORUM:
Players must remain seated on the bench at all times while the clock is running or is stopped except to rise in front of their seats to spontaneously react to an outstanding play by a member of their team or to acknowledge a replaced player(s). A technical foul will be assessed for infractions of this rule. Coaches will be allowed to stand during the game. Swearing, taunting, or any profanity will NOT be tolerated and a technical foul will be given.

8. PROTESTS:
The Greg Grant Sportsplex will not accept protests on league games unless an unregistered player has played in a game.

9. UNIFORMS:
All players on a team are to wear numbered shirts or jerseys, of the same color. You can provide your own numbered shirts or jerseys. If you do not want to provide your own we have a reversible mesh jersey that can be purchased, and can be used in any league or upcoming season at the Greg Grant Sportsplex. Players will not be allowed to play unless they have a numbered shirt or jersey.

10. JEWELRY and HEADBANDS:
No rings, watches, bracelets, earrings of any kind starter or otherwise, chains, headbands wider than 2 inches, or necklaces are to be worn by players. It is the responsibility of each coach to make sure his/her players are adhering to this rule. Technical fouls will be assessed on each count of infringement when discovered by the referee, and the article must then be removed.

11. SUBSTITUTIONS:
All leagues will use regular High school Rules for substitutions. Note that all players must report to the Official Scorekeeper before entering the game.

12. THREE SECOND VIOLATION:
The three-second violation does apply in all Leagues.

13. JUMP BALLS:
The game will begin with a jump ball at center court. If a held ball occurs the alternating possession rule will be followed.

14. FREE THROWS –
The Boy’s & Girl’s 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th, 7th and 8th, JV, and Varsity grade leagues will shoot from the regulation free throw line. All free throws must be shot in accordance with regulation basketball rules. Players in the paint may enter once the shooter releases the ball. The shooter and players beyond the 3 point arc must wait for the ball to hit the rim before entering the paint.

15. PRESS RULE –
A. In all 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade leagues, pressing is allowed. No pressing is allowed by a team who is ahead by sixteen or more points. In all J.V. or Varsity Leagues pressing is allowed the entire game.
B. In the 3rd/4th grade league pressing is only allowed in the 4th quarter, no pressing is allowed by a team who is ahead by 10 or more points.

16. DEFENSE:
Teams may use either Man to Man or Zone Defense.

17. WARM-UP AND PRACTICES:
You must bring your own basketballs for warm-ups, and/or practices.

18. GAME BALL:
The game ball will be provided for all league games. Boys in 3rd and 4th grade and 5th and 6th grade will use a 28.5 size ball, boys in 7th grade and up will use a regulation size ball. All girls’ leagues will all use 28.5 size balls.

19. OFFICIALS INTERPRETATIONS:
Officials will have final judgment on all calls. Any concerns or questions can be taken up with the league director.

Adult Basketball League Rules

For the purpose of its league games, the Greg Grant Sportsplex will use Michigan High School
Basketball Michigan Rules. However, in all cases during play, specific Greg Grant Sportsplex league rules will override
the High School Rules.

1. PLAYER ELIGIBILITY:
Any team using an ineligible player in any authorized league game, upon protest of the individual’s eligibility by an opposing team or Greg Grant Sportsplex staff member shall forfeit the game(s) in which the individual has participated. Specific eligibility rules are
listed below:

A. All players must be eighteen (18) to be eligible to participate in Adult Leagues, unless approved by the Greg Grant Sportsplex Athletic Staff.

B. Roster Requirements: 8 player minimum.

C. No player is allowed to participate on more than one team in his/her respective division, but may play in different divisions or leagues simultaneously.

D. No player may participate until his/her Player Registration and Waiver completed online or by form in person, and appropriate individual player fee is submitted to the Greg Grant Sportsplex.

E. Due to eligibility regulations, members of high school/college basketball teams cannot participate in the Greg Grant Sportsplex program anytime during their high school or college basketball season.

F. No player may play under an assumed name.

G. Players may not be added after the Player Add date, which is before the start of the fifth game.

H. Players must participate in at  least three (3) regular season games to be eligible for playoffs.

2. PROTEST OF ELIGIBILITY PROCEDURE:
A protest will be accepted on the basis of eligibility. Any team captain/coach may lodge a protest of eligibility under the provisions listed below:

A. Any protest of eligibility must be made before, during, or within 5 minutes after the conclusion of the game.

B. In the case of an eligibility protest, rosters will be on site.

C. Player(s) in question must present a picture I.D. to verify their eligibility.

D. Greg Grant Sportsplex staff will make the final decisions regarding protests.

E. If a protest of eligibility is upheld, the violating team will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player(s) participated (Please see policies & procedures for rule violations).

F. Any player who is judged to have played illegally shall be suspended for a minimum of four games from any team that he/she is a valid member of. The coach of the team for which a player plays illegally will also be suspended for a minimum of four games. As all other suspensions, suspensions of this nature will carry over into the next season if not completed during the current season.

G. All Greg Grant Sportsplex rulings are final. Protests of eligibility not covered in this rule shall be handled by the Greg Grant Sportsplex League Athletic Director in the spirit of these rules.

3. GYMNASIUM ENTRANCE TIME:
Teams may enter the gymnasium area fifteen (15) minutes before their scheduled game for that night. Please do not enter court area until previous games have been completed.

4. WARM-UP TIME:
Prior to the start time of the game, teams will have a five (5) minute warm-up period on their assigned court beginning at their scheduled game time. Note: If a game is running behind schedule, the referee may waive the five minute warm-up period. Use of courts reserved for pickup games is prohibited.

5. GAME FORFEIT TIME:
A. Teams are recommended to be at their court five (5) minutes prior to their scheduled game time.

B. A five (5) minute grace period will be instituted if one or both teams are not ready to begin play at the assigned time. If at the conclusion of this five-minute grace period one of the teams are not ready to begin play, a forfeit will be declared. The five minute grace period starts at the time the court has been assigned for your game, not at the end of the warm up period.

C. To start a game, teams must have at least one fewer player than the particular league that they are participating in, (e.g. 5 on-5 games must have at least 4 players per team to start play, 4-on-4 must have 3 players, etc.). However, if a team has no substitutes to replace disqualified players, it may continue with fewer than 4. When there is only one (1) player participating for a team, the team forfeits the game unless the referee believes that the team has an opportunity to win the game.

D. If a forfeit is determined due to lack of players, and if both teams desire, the teams scheduled to play at this time still have the rights to the court and may play a scrimmage or pick-up game which will not count in the standings.Note: scrimmage games will not be officiated.

6. COURT USAGE: 
Headbands wider than 2 inches or any form of cloth bandannas/rags are permitted under any circumstance.

B. Earrings are not allowed in any situation. Players must remove their earrings to participate in the Greg Grant Sportsplex leagues.

Players cannot tape earrings, they must remove them.

C. It is the responsibility of each manager to make sure his/her players are adhering to this rule.
15. TOBACCO USE, ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AND FOOD:

All forms of tobacco, alcoholic beverages and food are prohibited in the gymnasium areas. All violators will be asked to leave the playing area. The Greg Grant Sportsplex concession area will be open before, during and after most scheduled league games, and smoking is not permitted inside or outside the premises.

16. INCLEMENT WEATHER:
For information regarding cancellation of league games, please call the Greg Grant Sportsplex at (586) 795-0186.

17. VALUABLES:
Do not leave any valuables unattended at the Greg Grant Sportsplex. Greg Grant Sportsplex is not responsible for any loss or theft of personal items.

18. TEAM CLASSIFICATION POLICY:
Greg Grant Sportsplex reserves the right to classify the level of play for any team registered in our league.

19. EXCESSIVE FORFEITS:
A. Any team that forfeits two games in a given season, with the exception of forfeits resulting from the use of ineligible players or having an insufficient number of players to play because of an ejection, will forfeit all their remaining games unless the offending team
pays a league re-entry fee of $50.00.

B. A team must pay the re-entry fee at the Greg Grant Sportsplex within seven days of their second forfeit.

A reminder will be sent only as a courtesy measure to remind a team of its second forfeit. If a team is not sure of their number of forfeits it will be up to them to contact the League Director.

20. TECHNICAL FOULS:
For technical fouls, refer to the MHSAA basketball rule book. Referees have been instructed to handle technical fouls in the same manner they would during High School games. As a reminder:

A. No taunting will be allowed. Referees have been instructed to call technical fouls in situations where players are taunting their opponents.

B. Dunking is allowed, hanging on the rim is not allowed. Please do not abuse this courtesy extended by the Greg Grant Sportsplex. If rim damage occurs, the Greg Grant Sportsplex will be forced to revoke this rule.

C. Arguing (player or coach) with an official in an unsportsmanlike manner is prohibited. A regular technical foul will be assessed for both A and B. Note: If a player or coach is whistled for two (2) technical fouls in a game, they will be ejected from the contest and must leave the building.

D. After a player’s third technical foul in a season, he/she will be suspended for one game. Every second technical foul after that will merit an additional game suspension. This applies to the regular season as well as the playoffs.

E. Fighting between two players will result in a flagrant technical foul and immediate ejection of both players from the game. Each team will shoot two (2) free throws and the alternating possession arrow will determine who gets the ball. Note: a single player can also be called for a flagrant technical as a result of fighting or hitting an opposing player.

F. A break-away foul which is intended to do bodily harm to the offensive player, will result in a flagrant technical foul and ejection.

21. BENCH PERSONNEL:
Only eligible players, captain’s and a scorekeeper will be allowed on the team’s bench or surrounding area. All spectators and children must sit in the designated spectator area, with adequate supervision. Failure to comply will result in a technical foul being assessed and the removal of unauthorized bench personnel to the spectator area.

22. BENCH DECORUM:
A. Technical fouls will be assessed for any vulgar, disparaging or threatening language and (or) gestures, or any other unsportsmanlike conduct from a benched player, player/coach or manager.

B. Coaches, a scorekeeper and other bench personnel must remain seated on the bench at all times. The exceptions to this rule are players rising in front of their bench to spontaneously react to an outstanding play by a teammate or to acknowledge a replaced player.

A technical foul will be assessed for infractions of this rule.
